Here is my quick 10 minute sight-reading lesson done with the high school symphonic band: (Unfortunately, there is no video recording of this lesson. I ran out of space on my iPad and couldn’t upload any previous videos onto YouTube, like planned, due to the school wireless network.)

Johnston Sym. Band Sight-Reading 9-24

Reflecting back, I really wish I would have given more guidance and direction of what I wanted from my students to begin with. I attempted on running the piece fully through first, then diving more into rehearsing it here and there afterwards. With only having 10 minutes total and this particular piece running well over a total of 5 minutes alone, my original plan was a total bust. This is a great learning experience on my end because it really makes me think about what to do in such a short amount of time and plan accordingly in trying to figure out what would work best. By the time I figured out that my original plan had no chance of success, my 10 minute time frame was almost up. This is definitely something I’m going to have to continue working on when I’m given a task the day of!
